That’s why Legacy Living Advisors with EXIT Realty recently hosted a Senior Scam Awareness Webinar, where we spoke with a retired police officer to uncover the latest scams, how they work, and—most importantly—how to avoid becoming a victim.

Why Are Seniors Targeted?

Scammers see seniors as easy targets for a few key reasons:

• Financial Stability: Many seniors have retirement savings, home equity, and good credit.

• Trusting Nature: Growing up in a time when handshake deals were common, seniors are often more likely to trust others.

• Lack of Tech Knowledge: Some seniors aren’t as familiar with online scams or fraud tactics.

• Social Isolation: Scammers exploit loneliness to manipulate seniors through romance scams and emotional appeals.

The Most Common Scams Targeting Seniors

During the webinar, we covered the biggest scams seniors should watch out for, including:

🔹 Imposter Scams – Scammers pretend to be government officials (like the IRS, Social Security, or Medicare) to demand payment or personal information.

🔹 Grandparent Scam – A scammer pretends to be a grandchild in distress, asking for emergency money.

🔹 AI Voice Cloning Scams – Using AI, scammers mimic a loved one’s voice to make fake emergency requests seem real.

🔹 Tech Support Scams – Fake pop-ups warn about viruses, leading victims to call a “tech expert” who steals their info.

🔹 Romance Scams – Fraudsters build fake online relationships, gaining trust before asking for money.

🔹 Investment & Cryptocurrency Scams – Scammers promise big returns on fraudulent investments, often targeting seniors unfamiliar with digital currencies.

How to Protect Yourself

✅ Never share personal information over the phone unless you initiate the call. ✅ Verify before you act – Contact the actual agency or company directly. ✅ Use call-blocking apps like Nomorobo to filter scam calls. ✅ Enable two-factor authentication on bank and email accounts. ✅ Talk openly about scams with family and friends—scammers rely on secrecy!

What to Do If You Get Scammed

If you or a loved one falls victim to a scam, act fast:

• Stop communication with the scammer immediately.

• Contact your bank or credit card company to report fraud.

• Report the scam to the FTC (reportfraud.ftc.gov), the FBI (ic3.gov), or local authorities.

• Place a fraud alert on your credit report to prevent further damage.

• Don’t feel ashamed! Scammers are professionals—it can happen to anyone.
